And in true celebratory spirit, feel free to bring your favorite beverage to raise a toast—bonus points if it’s a Shiner Bock, Pat’s beer of choice.

Let’s honor him by celebrating his stories, smiling through the tears, and remembering the one-of-a-kind legacy he leaves behind.  We are grateful for your love and support on behalf of the entire Wertheim Family.

Honoring the Life & Legacy of Pat Wertheim

March 1, 2025 --With deep respect and a heavy heart, we share that Pat passed away peacefully on March 1st, surrounded by family. His oldest son, Kasey Wertheim (in photo with Pat), also a pioneer in forensics, passed away just 6 days later, losing his battle with cancer.

A true giant in forensic science, Pat dedicated over six decades to shaping the field of fingerprint analysis with unwavering passion, integrity, and brilliance. His impact is immeasurable—training thousands of latent print examiners, guiding hundreds of criminal justice agencies worldwide, and setting the highest standards for forensic best practices and ethical evidence analysis.

Pat was a beloved friend, father, grandpa, and family man.

*Please leave a message on the guest book below in remembrance of Pat

A privilege

I was privileged to have known Pat for many years. Although Pat’s expertise was in latent prints and mine in QD, footwear and tire evidence, we had a great deal in common, both working years for law enforcement, teaching classes, publishing, and eventually years in private forensic work. I worked with Pat on the South African Fred Van Der Vyver…

Always Remembered, Never to be Forgotten

It was about 35 years ago that Pat took me under his wing and mentored me in fingerprints. Initially he was my verifier on case work while I worked at the sheriff’s department, just down the road from where Pat worked for the Department of Public Safety. As years went by we became the best of friends, then colleagues on…

Pat reached out a while back on LinkedIn and asked me if there was any evidence in my husband‘s Wrongful Conviction case which could be tested for forensically.  He must have seen my painful posts of the torture we suffer daily, given my husband‘s wrongful incarceration and absolute innocence, which is followed worldwide. It was very kind of him to…

Yet another giant of the science gone, but not forgotten.

As an Australian working in the UK in the early 2000s I had the opportunity of presenting at the Fingerprint Society Lectures where I met with Pat. He, David Asbaugh and I were presenting regarding the shift in the UKs Fingerprint Standard. From memory I followed both Pat and David. A little daunting for an unknown such as myself. I…

A Dear Friend Gone

What a shock to hear of Pat’s passing! I met him in October of 1999 at a course he and three others gave in Portland Oregon. I am honoured that he continued our friendship all these years. We were in touch as recently as the end of January this year when he commented on a portrait and caricature of him…

You will be missed

The world of forensics and fingerprints lost an amazing person and resource when you passed away. The impact Pat had on my career  can’t be overstated. Working with him at the Army lab at the start of my career was something I will always cherish. To have him around to train me from his box of exercises that he used…
